It was ten years ago that I read the book that focused my life. The book was Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court by John Wooden. I don’t know that I have read a book since that has had the same impact. It certainly remains my most highlighted book.
The single most influential sentence from the book was Coach Wooden’s definition of success:
“Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”
This sentence helped me create a coaching and life style centered around what I can control, which isn’t always winning and losing.
This book also continues to be the best parenting and teaching book I have ever read. Coach Wooden’s lessons are so much more powerful than simply seeing them applied to a game.
I’ve certainly grown since reading this book for the first time, but I truly do not know where I would be today if I had never read it.
