Maybe we should spend more time developing?
Does talent matter? Absolutely, but the person that is currently in the position you want to replace use to show promise for talent. But somewhere along the way they fail from your liking. What did they do? Can it be fixed?
I’m certainly not suggesting that we shouldn’t look to find good people, but maybe you already have. Maybe that person needs a new approach. Have you tried to prove how much you care for that person? Have you had the difficult conversations about improvement?
Recruiting great talent is good, so is developing it, and maybe who needs the most developing is you.
